Institutions and Agrarian Development
€ 79.99 *

This book argues that development strategies have thus far failed in Western Africa because the many challenges afflicting the area have yet to be explored and understood from the perspective of institutional resources. With a particular focus on three countries on the bend of the Upper West African coast - Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone - this book offers a theory to account for the nature of these institutional elements, to test deductions against evidence, and finally to propose a reset for rural development policy to make fuller use of local institutional resources. Based on quantitative analysis and eight years of multidisciplinary field research, this volume features several large-scale RCTs in the domain of rural development, local governance, and nature conservation. The authors address one of the biggest topics in agricultural and development economics today: the structural transformation of poor, agrarian economies, and they do so through the important and unique lens of institutions.

Alternative Food Networks

In recent years, Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) have been a key issue both in the scientific community and in public debates. This is due to their profound implications for rural development, local sustainability, and bio-economics. This edited collection discusses what the main determinants of the participation of operators - both consumers and producers - in AFNs are, what the conditions for their sustainability are, what their social and environmental effects are, and how they are distributed geographically. Further discussions include the effect of AFNs in structuring the food chain and how AFNs can be successfully scaled up. The authors explicitly take an interdisciplinary approach to analyse AFNs from different perspectives, using as an example the Italian region of Piedmont, a particularly interesting case study due to the diffusion of AFNs in the area, as well as due to the fact that it was in this region that the ´Slow Food´ movement originated.

Water-Farm technologies such as aquaponics and hydroponics as resource- and space-sensitive farming systems are at the focus of urban and infrastructural transformation processes towards the loop city. RWF first-time investigates the link of these light-weight farm systems with technologies and modules of building-integrated (waste-)water recycling. Besides the theoretical reflection of rainwater use, the hygienically-safe treatment and use of greywater (kitchen, bathroom) as service water for the production of fish and edible plants is investigated and tested on a practical level. In addition to, the project first time tested the production of an urban liquid fertilizer (´´goldwater´´) out of blackwater (toilet) for an resource saving urban food production. Based on and via an upscaling process building studies and building passports are developed for conventional typologies such as residential buildings, educational buildings, hotels or commercial buildings. Networking maps envision the loop-oriented city transformation exemplary for distinct Berlin neighbourhoods from the inner-city, via the periphery to areas of transformation. The publication summarizes the results of four years of interdisciplinary research in the format of a compact manual. It shows technological and urban design strategies linking decentralized wastewater and food production as multifunctional infrastructure within the urban context. The results of practical and design work are shown at different scales: technology, building, neighbourhood, city as well as from the perspective of RWF actors and users. A Toolbox offers additional materials and examples focussing topics such as operation & maintenance, feasibility or life-cycle assessment. Upscaling and transferibility of the modular ROOF WATER-FARM approach become understandable ´´from the screw to the city
